Kassandra vs Sithonia: Which Halkidiki Peninsula Is Right for You?
Updated 30 Sep 2026
Halkidiki has three "fingers". The first, Kassandra, and the second, Sithonia, are where almost all visitors stay. The third, Mount Athos, is a monastic community you can see from a boat. The two holiday peninsulas feel quite different.
Kassandra
Kassandra is closer to Thessaloniki and more developed. Resorts such as Kallithea, Hanioti and Pefkohori have long beaches, promenades, large hotels and more going on in the evening. Villages such as Afitos keep a traditional character. Travel time from the airport is about one hour to an hour and a half.
Sithonia
Sithonia is greener and quieter, with pine forest down to the sea and many small coves. Vourvourou, Sarti and Neos Marmaras are the main bases. It suits people who want to swim in a different bay each day. Allow one and a half to two hours from the airport.
