Best Beaches in Halkidiki: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos

Updated 1 Oct 2026

Halkidiki has more than 500 km of coastline and some of the clearest water in Greece. Each of its peninsulas has a different character, so the "best" beach depends on what you are looking for.

Kassandra: long, organised beaches

The first peninsula is known for long sandy beaches with sunbeds, beach bars and shallow water that suits children. Popular choices include the beaches around Kallithea and Hanioti, the beach at Sani, the sandy spit of Cape Possidi, and the quieter bays near Paliouri at the southern tip.

Sithonia: coves, pines and turquoise water

The middle peninsula is greener and wilder. Around Vourvourou you will find calm water between small islands and the rocky Karidi beach. On the west coast, Lagomandra lies between Nikiti and Neos Marmaras. In the south, the natural harbour of Porto Koufo and the bays near Toroni are worth the drive, and the east coast near Sarti looks across to Mount Athos.

Near Mount Athos: Ammouliani

A short ferry ride from Tripiti, the small island of Ammouliani has some of the whitest sand in the region. It makes an easy day out if you are staying near Ouranoupoli.

Tips

  • In July and August, arrive before 11:00 for a good spot and cooler sand.
  • The wind often changes sides during the day: if one coast is wavy, the other side of the peninsula is usually calm.
