Ouranoupoli and Mount Athos: How to Get There from Thessaloniki
Актуализирано 1 окт 2026
Ouranoupoli is the last village before the monastic community of Mount Athos and the port for all boats to the peninsula. It is also a pleasant seaside village in its own right, with a Byzantine tower on the waterfront and beaches nearby.
Getting there
From Thessaloniki Airport, Ouranoupoli is about 125 km and just under two hours by road. A private transfer takes you straight to your hotel or to the harbour. If you need to catch a morning boat, tell us the departure time when you book and we will plan the pickup so you arrive with time to spare.
Visiting Mount Athos
Entry to Mount Athos itself is allowed only to men, with a permit (diamonitirion) arranged in advance through the Mount Athos Pilgrims' Bureau. The permit is collected in Ouranoupoli before boarding the boat. Check the current rules and timetables with the Bureau when planning.
The Mount Athos cruise
Everyone can see the monasteries from the sea. Sightseeing cruises leave Ouranoupoli and sail along the west coast of the peninsula, keeping the required distance from the shore. It is one of the most popular day trips in Halkidiki.
Combining it with Ammouliani
The island of Ammouliani, with its white-sand beaches, is a few minutes away by ferry from Tripiti, close to Ouranoupoli. Many visitors spend one day on the Athos cruise and another on the island.
